Utah FNAWS members joined the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists and others for the first California Sheep capture and transplant in the new year.
The capture took place on Antelope Island just north and west of the Salt Lake City International Airport over a two-day period in early January 2008.
The first day there were a total of 21 rams and 15 ewes and lambs captured, given health checks and released on the Stansbury Mountains west of Tooele.
On the second afternoon, another 19 rams were captured and released on the Newfoundland Mountains west of Antelope Island.
These 55 sheep will certainly help strengthen both of these newly established herds and provide additional hunting opportunity in the very near future.
Utah FNAWS wishes to thank everyone who volunteered their time to help with theis exciting capture and transplant. “The DWR has done an excellent job managing these unique animals to the point where today we have a brood stock of healthy, growing numbers of California Bighorns living without too much pressure on Antelope Island,” said Ryan Foutz, UFNAWS President. “If things continue as they have, and we think they will, we expect to conduct these transplants for many years to come.” |
